Here are some of the cool things we've seen lately:
Ice fishing. A number of fishermen have been spotted drilling holes in the thick ice, setting up portable heaters, and settling in for a quiet day of fishing on the frozen pond. Most arrive early in the morning, just as the sun is rising, eager to start the day. Some even bring along ice fishing tents, sleds, and additional gear to make the experience more comfortable.
Have you ever tried cold plunging? Some bold souls have been cutting holes in the ice and taking a refreshing dip. See the photo for one of the cold plunge holes. Brrrrr!

Dogs and walkers have been enjoying the frozen pond too, mostly staying to the side. One dog walker noted that the shoreline was solidly frozen but that it felt a little soft moving inwards. The dogs seemed to prefer the shoreline too.
A group of owls starting up a mighty conversation one morning, surprising local walkers. There were six or seven different owls reported hooting from different nearby locations in the woods past the White Ave. side of the pond . The entire thing went on for a couple of minutes then stopped.
A great blue heron has been spotted in various spots around White Pond, including the docks and shorelines along White Ave and Sachem Cove. Why do some herons remain here instead of migrating? Could our increasingly mild winters be a factor?
A very large orange and white fox was spotted near the water pumping station. Although similar in coloring to some of the kits that are seen in the Dover Street and Powdermill Road neighborhood, it was easily three times as large. It eyed the walkers up and down then took off into the woods behind the station.
The deer and squirrels have been plentiful even in the dead of winter. There must be enough to eat in the woods that keep them around.
Seen anything cool lately around the pond? Let us know and we'll add to this list.
(Look out for the ice on the trails this time of year! They've been slick.)
